Community

CommunityThe Church Centre in Glencruitten Road is as important as any of the actual "church" buildings. This is where much of our contact with the wider community takes place. Many different groups hire the various rooms. Jack & Jill Playgroup, the Toy Cupboard, dance classes and Parents Together mean that many youngsters and their parents are regular visitors. Tai Chi, NHS & Council events also occur at the centre, and of course church based ones.

Guild

Afternoon and Evening Guild both meet once a month. Originally just for women, men are now very welcome, though it has to be said they are still in the minority. The Guild programme is varied and interesting. For a copy of the year's programme contact or see our news page for imminent dates.

Coffee & Chat - Wednesdays 10-12

Regulars and occasional visitors, churchgoers and casual acquaintances. Many but by no means all are retired folk. Some drop in for a few minutes, others stay for an hour or more.

Men's Prayer Lunch

A small group of men meet approximately once a month for fellowship and prayer.

Lord's Larder

In response to families and individuals struggling to make ends meet all the churches in Oban got together to found the Lord's Larder. Food and toiletries are donated regularly and people in need are referred by the Social Work Department. The schools often give the proceeds of their Harvest services. We have boxes in the churches which are emptied on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Financial contributions are also welcome so that some fresh food can be included in parcels.

Pastoral Care Group

This group of elders and church members offers care in various ways in the wider community. This includes short term help with shopping or transport, hospital visiting, and arranging occasional entertainment in Eadar Glinn nursing home. They run an annual coffee morning in aid of Eadar Glinn.

Hospital

Rev Bill Gray, one of our members, is Chaplain to Lorn and Islands District General Hospital in Oban.

Singing for the Brain

A weekly singing, activities and exercise group for frail older people with either dementia, Parkinson’s Disease or the after-effects of a stroke. Ability to sing is definitely not required, only a desire to relax and enjoy the friendly atmosphere around making music of different kinds. Carers are warmly invited to accompany their family member or friend and there is no charge. There is no need to book or commit to coming regularly.

(This group is independent of the church.)

Beautiful Minds

Beautiful Minds is a Mental Health support group, which is open to service users, carers and family members.

We meet in the church centre on the third Monday of every month, new members are always welcome to come along to our very informal meetings, a chance to meet with folks who know what you are going through and have a friendly ear.

With statistics showing that one in five of the population at sometime in their life suffering from mental ill health, we aim to provide support and get rid of the stigma surrounding all types of metal ill health.

This is a church group but is open to people of all faiths (and none).
